12/19/09 - We ran into a shipping snag. (shipping
company closes the week of Christmas) So we are now
shipping after January 4th, when the shipping company
reopens after the holidays. The more donations we
receive until then, the more computers we can send!
Whoo Hoo!
12/17/09 - Since we have already fulfilled our goal of
sending five computers to Roatan. How about five more?
Let's try to send a total of ten computers to the kids
in Roatan! Ten computers... Wouldn't that be amazing!
12/8/09 - We have ordered five computers, and five
monitors. We will be filling the room we painted on the
Sweet Cruise, at the Sandy Bay e-learning center with
five brand new computers. This brings the total to seven
new computers, which were donated to the PIER
organization Roatan, by Sweet volunteers and this project.
Amazing!
We have raised the money for five computers!
(Whoo Hoo!)
Thank you, all so much, for your kind donations.
I have been talking to the people involved with the
PIER organization, and they are ecstatic!
Way to go people!!
Happy Holidays!
Denise
BTW - Have you signed up yet for a Sweet Vacation?
I encourage you all to do so --> Sweet Vacation Info
(The Sweet trips are simply amazing!)
Why am I doing this?
This all came about, when I visited Roatan in November 2009, with Sweet. What is Sweet you ask? Well, it is a lesbian travel company with a twist. You see, they merge the best of lesbian travel with social and environmental awareness. They truly aim to make the world a better place while having a blast in it. All of Sweet’s vacations are carbon neutral, meaning they offset pollution created by air, land and sea travel. Not only was the cruise fun (really fun), but, Sweet arranges these great community projects everywhere they visit. Shannon Wentworth and Jen Rainin's vision is brilliant. Their capacity to give back, is well, infectious. The community project in Roatan was for the PIER organization. The Sweet team completely set this up, and all we had to do is show up. It was amazing!
I was one of twenty lesbian volunteers, who donated time, money, books, and computers in Roatan. We painted the Sandy Bay learning center, setup computers, catalogued books, and reached in our pockets to donate over $600 in cash. Since we already donated two computers at Sandy Bay Roatan, sending five more will complete the room we painted, so the room will contain all new computers.
While setting up computers at the PIER learning center Sandy Bay - Roatan, I had the pleasure of meeting this little boy. His name was Maldon, and he was 9 years old. I asked him to help me set up the computers, and help me he did! He was enthralled with what we were doing. This little boy inspired me. Standing by my side, ready, willing and able to help in anyway possible. He had the biggest brown eyes, and Maldon was one of the most polite children, I have ever met. Looking in his eyes, seeing them light up as we worked together, I knew, in that very moment, that I had to do more.
Beyond my personal experience, I have since learned that there is really not a school system in Honduras. So organizations like PIER, are going in, and trying to assimilate a school system structure. They are doing this by creating classrooms, curriculums, and even installing playgrounds. Poverty is very high in Roatan.
"Please join me in helping to develop creative minds in Roatan"
What Have I done so far?
I have talked with everyone involved in the PIER project in Honduras, and in the United States. I have obtained the 501(c)3 status paperwork, and have discussed ways of insuring that there is a clear path of delivery for the computers. Everything is set, and now we are ready to buy equipment.
What can you do?
Please help me reach my goal of sending five computers by Christmas 2009. Anything you can contribute would be much appreciated. I have selected the following donations:
(5) Acer V173B 17" LCD Display
(5) Acer Aspire REVO R3610-U9012
Keyboard/mouse, wireless and network connection included
(1) Acer Optical external DVD/RW (To be used on any computer)
What will I do?
I am donating my time for project management, website management, and technical support. I will pay for credit card processing, shipping costs, remote technical support to Sandy Bay. I will ensure that everything will get delivered safely and setup properly. I will also keep detailed records of every transaction.
THANK YOU - for your support!!
